What is Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates is the original method developed by Joseph Pilates (December 9, 1883 – October 9, 1967). Created in the early 20th century, this method was designed as a complete system of movement to strengthen the body from the inside out. Joseph Pilates believed that physical health was essential to overall well-being, originally calling his work Contrology — the practice of controlling the body through the mind.

While interning in England during World War I, Joseph began refining his exercises to rehabilitate injured soldiers. In 1926, he immigrated to the United States and, alongside his wife Clara, opened a studio in New York City. His method quickly became a trusted practice among dancers, athletes, and performers for its ability to build strength, flexibility, and resilience without unnecessary strain.

At our wellness studio, we offer classical Pilates classes that follow a precise and intentional sequence of exercises performed on the mat and on traditional apparatus — including the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Barrels — all originally designed by Joseph Pilates himself. We honor this legacy by using original-style equipment manufactured by Gratz, the company Joseph Pilates collaborated with during his lifetime. Our Reformers maintain the same spring load and resistance that Joseph Pilates intended, preserving the integrity, challenge, and effectiveness of the method.

Unlike trend-driven fitness, classical Pilates remains rooted in its original structure and principles. Every exercise is purposeful, emphasizing core strength, alignment, breath, and fluid movement. This timeless practice supports posture, mobility, injury prevention, and lifelong strength — meeting each individual where they are while promoting intelligent, lasting movement.

Angela's Story

For Angela Glass, Classical Pilates has never been just a workout—it has been a lifelong tool for strength, healing, and confidence. Throughout different seasons of life, her Pilates classes provided a consistent, intelligent practice that supported her body, restored balance, and built resilience from the inside out.

What began as a personal commitment to feeling strong and capable evolved into a deeper respect for the method itself. Angela experienced firsthand how the precision and discipline of Classical Pilates creates lasting change—not quick fixes, but sustainable strength that carries into everyday life. This experience inspired her to preserve the integrity of the method and eventually open Forum Pilates Studio, a wellness studio dedicated to this transformative practice.

Angela believes that Pilates is most impactful when taught with care, intention, and respect for the individual. Community, connection, and thoughtful instruction are at the heart of her teaching philosophy. What makes Forum Pilates Studio especially meaningful is the opportunity to share this work alongside her daughter, Monroe. Through learning the method together, Monroe gained a deeper understanding of Pilates—not only as a physical practice but as something that shaped her mother’s life. What began as Angela’s passion has naturally become a shared one, strengthening both their bond and their vision for a studio rooted in integrity, care, and community.
